RN First Assistant (RNFA)
Job Summary
An RN First Assistant (RNFA) is a highly trained registered nurse who works in collaboration with the surgeon and healthcare team to ensure patient safety and optimal surgical outcomes. This role involves performing perioperative nursing duties in the operating room and includes scrub and circulating responsibilities.
Job Duties
- Collaborate with the surgeon and healthcare team to provide effective surgical assistance.
- Practice perioperative nursing with a focus on patient safety and optimal outcomes.
- Assist in the operative phase of the perioperative experience under the direction of the surgeon.
- Perform roles of an OR staff RN when not designated as RNFA.
- Utilize skills in scrubbing and circulating during surgical procedures.
Job Requirements
- Active NYS License as a Registered Professional Nurse.
- Completion of an accredited RN First Assistant course.
- CNOR certification required.
- Experience with Da Vinci robotic systems is preferred, specifically in:
- Robotic Urology
- Robotic GYN
- Robotic Colorectal
- Robotic Surgical Oncology (e.g., Whipple procedures, gastrectomies, hernias)
- Robotic Thoracic
- Robotic General Surgery (e.g., gallbladders, appendectomies)
- Two years of OR experience or experience in a Level 1 trauma setting preferred.
Certifications
- BLS certification (American Heart Association only).
- ACLS certification preferred (American Heart Association only).
- CNOR certification required.
Work Schedule
This position offers various schedules including 36 or 48 hours per week, Monday through Friday during daytime shifts. On-call responsibilities may be required until 11 PM, with no weekend or holiday shifts expected. Scheduling is based on unit needs.
