Registered Nurse (RN) - Med Surg/Critical Care Unit

Position Overview

The Registered Nurse (RN) in the Med Surg/Critical Care Unit is responsible for providing exemplary individualized nursing care to critically ill patients ranging from adolescents (16+) to geriatric populations. This role demands strong critical thinking skills to assess and respond effectively to changing patient conditions.

Key Responsibilities

• Deliver individualized nursing care to critically ill patients within the medical/surgical scope.
• Conduct thorough assessments and respond appropriately to patient complications and crises.
• Interpret and act upon hemodynamic monitoring results.
• Utilize technology to enhance the quality of patient care.
• Collaborate with physicians and healthcare team members, delegating tasks effectively while supervising unlicensed personnel.
• Provide supervision and training for students assigned to the unit.

Equipment Utilized

• EPIC One Chart computerized charting system
• PLUM IV “smart” pumps
• Central and arterial lines, ventilators, IABP
• Overhead patient lift system

Qualifications

• Minimum of 2 years of Critical Care Unit (CCU) experience required.
• Additional experience in Med/Surg, Pediatrics, and Emergency Department is preferred.
• Current South Dakota RN or multistate compact RN license required.
• Certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) is mandatory.
• CCRN and/or TNCC certifications are a plus.

Shift Requirements

• Shifts consist of 12 hours, rotating between day and night schedules.
• Every other weekend and holiday rotation is required.
• The unit operates with a minimum staffing of two RNs when patients are present, ensuring no RN works alone.

Nurse to Patient Ratio

The nurse-to-patient ratio in the Critical Care Unit is typically 1:1 or 1:2. In cases of Med/Surg overflow within the unit, the ratio may adjust to 1:4.

Training and Orientation

The onboarding process includes two days of general orientation followed by 1-2 days of unit-specific orientation, tailored based on prior experience and familiarity with computerized charting and equipment.
