PCU / Step-Down RN – Job Summary
- Unit: PCU / Critical Care Step-Down
- Shift: 12-hour nights, 6:45 PM–6:45 AM
- Schedule: 3 shifts per week
- Contract: 13 weeks
- Guaranteed Hours: 36 hours per week
- Patient Ratio: 1 nurse to 3 patients
- Beds: 14
- Charting System: Cerner
- Scrub Color: Navy blue
- BSN: Not required
- Travelers: First-time travelers accepted
Requirements
- 2–3 years of PCU or ICU step-down experience
- BLS, ACLS, and NIHSS certifications
- COVID vaccination required
- Experience with:
- Arterial and CVP lines
- Titrating IV drips and pressors
- Precedex, dopamine, dobutamine, and Levophed
- Trach care and stable ventilated patients
Patient Population
- ICU step-down patients
- Trauma and traumatic brain injury (TBI)
- Major surgery and carotid endarterectomy (CEA)
- Sepsis patients
Schedule & Floating
- 3 shifts per week
- Every other weekend required
- Holidays follow the permanent staff rotation
- First to float to Telemetry or Med-Surg
- No on-call requirement
- Self-scheduling generally available
- One unit orientation shift
Important Notes
- Busy unit with frequent patient turnover.
- Strong teamwork, communication, and independent decision-making are essential.
- Familiarity with HCAHPS and core measures is important.
- Holiday time off may be considered but is not guaranteed.
- Hospital may cancel up to 4 shifts during a 13-week contract
