Job Summary:
Step Down Unit Nurse in an acute care setting, responsible for providing specialized patient care within the step-down unit of a healthcare facility. The position involves managing adult patient populations with various diagnoses, including cardiac, neuro, oncology, renal, and post-surgical cases, ensuring high-quality clinical care during night shifts. The role requires floating within designated zones as needed, and adherence to unit-specific protocols and certifications.
Job Details:
- Location: The position is based in a healthcare facility within a 60-mile radius of Colorado Springs, CO, including assigned zones around the city with multiple facilities such as Penrose Hospital, St. Francis Medical Center, St. Francis InterQuest, St. Mary Corwin, and St. Thomas More.
- Schedule: Nights shifts, with a minimum of 36 hours per week. The schedule consists of 12-hour shifts, with a commitment to help fill gaps in permanent staffing and help manage unit needs.
- Required Qualifications: Valid license to practice as a registered nurse, with a minimum of 2 years of experience in a progressive care or step-down unit, BLS (American Heart Association), ACLS (American Heart Association), and NIHSS certifications. Experience with cardiac drips, insulin, and ativan is required.
- Preferred Qualifications: Prior neuro experience and Epic electronic health record experience.
- Unit/Nursing Requirements: Comfortable titrating and managing cardiac drips, insulin, ativan, and heparin. Knowledge of common titratable infusions such as dopamine, dobutamine, cardiizem, amio, insulin, and heparin is required. The charge nurse may have a small patient assignment; nurses are expected to float across multiple units including ICU (with low acuity holds), PCU/Stepdown, and MS-Tele.
- Weekend and Holiday Requirements: 6-9 weekend shifts in a 6-week schedule; may participate in holiday rotation.
- Float Policy: Float rotation may be required within Zone 1, covering facilities around Colorado Springs, CO. Flexibility is essential, with some assignments into higher acuity units based on operational needs.
- Additional Information: Orientation includes 1-2 days with a preceptor; first float assignment communicated on or before the Monday start date. The facility can cancel up to 4 shifts during a 13-week assignment, or 3 shifts if less than 13 weeks. Charting is completed using EPIC electronic health record system.
