About the Unit

  • 20-bed Pediatric ICU
  • Typical ICU ratios: 1:1–2
  • Stepdown ratios: 1:3
  • In-house pediatrician 24/7
  • Residents and APPs present 24/7
  • Dedicated RT support for vents, CPAP, and BiPAP
  • Monitor techs monitor telemetry; strips are read off-unit
  • Nurse aides available on days and nights

Patient Population

The PICU cares for a diverse pediatric population, including:

  • Congenital heart patients
  • DKA
  • Respiratory conditions
  • Neurosurgery
  • Tracheostomies
  • Ventilators
  • G-tubes
  • Women's & Children's Hospital patients

Important: This PICU does take adult patients. Travelers must be comfortable caring for adults when needed, including adult patients who may be cared for in L&D.

Skills & Experience

  • 2 years of PICU experience is required
  • BLS and PALS required
  • RNs titrate sedation and vasoactive medications per physician orders
  • Common medications/drips include Fentanyl, Versed, Precedex, vasoactive medications, TPN, and MIVF

Schedule

7:00 AM–7:00 PM
7:00 PM–7:00 AM

  • Self-scheduling is available
  • Block scheduling may be possible based on unit needs
  • Scheduling team balances the overall schedule
  • No call/standby requirement

Weekends & Holidays

  • 2 weekends per 4-week schedule
  • Friday, Saturday, and Sunday are considered weekend shifts for both days and nights
  • Travelers may be required to work holidays and will be incorporated into the regular holiday rotation

Floating

Travelers may float within Children's services, including:

  • L&D
  • NICU
  • Acute Pediatrics

Travelers are expected to take the normal patient ratios for the unit they float to.

Orientation

Orientation includes:

  • EPIC training
  • New Staff Orientation (NSO)
  • Competency and equipment review with a clinical preceptor
  • 3 PICU shifts with a mentor

Vaccine Requirement

COVID vaccination is required. Medical and religious exemptions may be considered through the facility's exemption process.
