Registered Nurse – Progressive Critical Care Unit
Facility: Albany Medical Center
Location: Albany, NY

Shift: Nights, 7:00 PM – 7:30 AM
Schedule: 4x12s; every other weekend
Patient Ratio: 3:1 average; 2:1 for higher-acuity assignments
Charting System: Epic — experience required
Float Required: Yes; to care areas with like patient populations
Call Requirement: Not specified
Note: Navy blue scrubs required. Competency test required within 24 hours of submission.
Position Overview:
The Progressive Critical Care Unit provides specialized care to medically unstable and surgically complex adult patients, including trauma patients age 15 and older. Nurses care for high-acuity patients requiring frequent surveillance, assessment, intervention, advanced hemodynamic monitoring, and critical care therapies.
Job duties:
- Provide high-acuity nursing care to medically unstable medical, surgical, trauma, and neurological patients.
- Monitor cardiac rhythms, arterial lines, EVDs, hemodynamics, and other critical patient parameters.
- Manage vasoactive, sedative, anticoagulant, thrombolytic, and other high-risk medication infusions according to protocols.
- Provide respiratory support including HFNC, BiPAP, and CPAP while monitoring patients for respiratory deterioration.
- Perform and assist with EVD management, wound care, drains, vascular sheaths, EKOS, suctioning, and other critical care procedures.
Requirements:
License: Active RN license; eligible for New York practice
Experience: Minimum 2 years of experience; strong adult PCU or community hospital ICU experience preferred
Certifications: BLS, ACLS required; NIHSS preferred; PCCN or CCRN strongly encouraged
Other requirement: Epic experience required; competency test must be completed within 24 hours of submission
Unit Details:
Unit: D3N – Progressive Critical Care Unit
Patient Ratios: 3:1, with 2:1 assignments for higher-acuity patients
Patient Population: Adults 18+ and trauma patients 15+ with high-acuity medical, surgical, neurological, respiratory, endocrine, GI, orthopedic, and trauma conditions
Patient Diagnoses: Respiratory failure, sepsis, traumatic brain injury, spinal injury, stroke, heart failure, respiratory disturbances, electrolyte imbalance, GI bleeding, coagulopathy, renal disease, drug overdose, hemodynamic instability, complex trauma, and surgical complications.
Nurses with strong adult PCU experience, particularly those coming from community hospital ICU settings, tend to do well in this unit. The average patient assignment is 3 high-acuity patients.
