Job Summary
Registered Nurse (RN) - Medical Surgical with Telemetry in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. This position involves providing patient care on a busy medical-surgical telemetry unit within an academic medical center. The RN will be responsible for managing a variety of patient diagnoses, interpreting cardiac rhythms, and utilizing advanced monitoring technology to ensure optimal patient outcomes.
Job Details
- Schedule: Night shifts, 12 hours per shift, minimum of 36 hours per week
- Required Qualifications: Valid license to practice as a Registered Nurse, BLS (Basic Life Support), ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support), NIHSS (National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale) certification, 1 year of medical-surgical and telemetry experience, and NC licensure, must be willing to accept a first-time traveler
- Preferred Qualifications: Travel experience beneficial but not mandatory
- Patient Types/Common Diagnoses: Variety of medical-surgical conditions including diabetes mellitus (without insulin gtts), respiratory illnesses, gastrointestinal illnesses, neurological surgeries, trauma surgeries, spinal precautions, pre- and post-cardiac or vascular procedures, and cardiac catheterization patients
- Patient Ratios: RN: 1:5, CNA: 1:10
- Skills Required: Cardiac rhythm interpretation, operation of PCA pumps, management of surgical drains, wound care, application of TR Bands, and handling of prescribed medications such as Cardizem, Nitro, and Amio; comfort with learning new GTTs
- Support within Department: CNA support for vital signs, blood glucose checks, safety rounds, and ADLs; occasional floating as a Charge nurse; peripheral blood draws; and availability of RT 24/7 with paging for assistance
- Technology/Equipment: EMR system (Epic), IV pumps with alarms, medication dispensing via Omnicell, external fixators, chest tubes, PCAs, trachs, and complex wound care devices; monitoring of cardiac strips by bedside RN
- Orientation: Two days departmental orientation, in addition to facility onboarding
- Other Notes: Scrub color is royal blue; free parking available; unit culture is friendly and academic-focused; facility has a 24/7 hospitalist and intensivist support
