Job Summary
The ICU Registered Nurse (RN) position is located in Minneapolis, MN, within an academic medical center's intensive care unit. The role involves providing specialized care to ECMO (Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation) patients, requiring advanced training and experience in ECMO therapy, including circuit management, anticoagulation, and patient monitoring. The position offers a 12-hour day shift schedule over a 13-week assignment starting on August 31, 2026.

Job Details

  • Schedule: 12-hour shifts, 36 hours per week
  • Required Qualifications: Active RN license; minimum of 1 year of experience caring for ECMO patients; trained in Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy (CRRT), Phase One Cardiac Surgery Recovery, and Targeted Temperature Management; associates or bachelors degree in Nursing from an accredited program.
  • Preferred Qualifications: Experience managing multiple ECMO circuits; familiarity with Impella, IABP, and VADs; participation in multidisciplinary conferences and quality improvement initiatives.
  • Duties and Responsibilities:
    • Assist physicians, RNs at the bedside, and other clinical staff with ECMO circuit initiation, maintenance, and discontinuation, including priming, blood bank communications, and medication administration.
    • Manage mechanical support devices such as Impella, Intra-Aortic Balloon Pump (IABP), and Ventricular Assist Devices (VADs).
    • Manage up to three circuits simultaneously or one circuit per patient, ensuring safe patient handling and circuit integrity.
    • Conduct detailed assessments of ECMO circuits, blood gases, anticoagulation, and laboratory values, and adjust pump flow and oxygenator flow accordingly.
    • Respond promptly to emergent circuit or cannula issues.
    • Complete all required documentation, charting, and monitoring following protocols.
    • Contribute to data collection, quality improvement, and research related to ECMO therapy.
    • Participate in mandatory ECMO competency training and attend multidisciplinary conferences or review journal articles for Continuing Education Units (CEUs).
